Autonomy

Intern year, month two
Called to the VA – crisis assessment needed
Enter the ED alone, grasping Pocket Psychiatry
Earnest, “How can I help you today?”
Suddenly, stale breath on my face
A massive body blocking the door
He will kill my family
Saved by security
Days later
He approaches at a run

He hugs me
