Sorrow

Moonlighting in a rural ER,
young boy brought in not breathing.
He’d been bullied, hit by rocks.
CPR, Intubation, central lines, drugs, shock, pacemaker all futile.
The look on my face gave the news before I could speak.
“Don’t tell me!” groaned his father
“Don’t tell me I can’t tell him I love him!”
