Toes Too Small to Make a Footprint

At thirteen weeks she had spontaneous abortion. She waited for the tissue to pass.

It didn’t.

She awoke to fevers, chills, her bedsheets cover in blood.

At 2 a.m. we rushed for an urgent D&E.

In the OR she grabbed my hand, “Excuse me,” she said, “When this is over can I hold my baby?”
