The Navajo Reservation, first day on call. The new pediatrician. “We need you in here, a boy’s been run over.” Whoa. Arrive, prepare. (Pray.) Am I ready? Am I trained? Will I save him? Intubated, resuscitated, put on a plane. Six weeks later in clinic, he’s here, bouncing off the walls. Smiling. Laughing. Normal. Whoa.
