Work Acquaintances

“Sick or Not-Sick?”
Our first task after leaving the classroom.
For me, like many,
death had existed only as absence.
Its pallid form
shallow breath
thready pulse
shrouded by hospitals
now familiar.
Ours is the burdened privilege
to recognize its face
to know and feel
that not one of us
simply vanishes back to atoms
