Four Years

My oath to first, do no harm,
Was slipping away.
Political rhetoric and expediency
Crept into more of what I did.
Within arms’ length of patients imprisoned,
My professional identity was reborn.
Life lost too soon from a kidney stone,
A leg and an eye ravaged by diabetes,
A hug after talking about end-of-life wishes.

Michelle Hofmann, MD, MPH, MHCDS

Senior Associate Dean (Interim),
Southern Utah Regional Medical Campus
Associate Professor (Clinical), Department of Pediatrics

Michelle’s creativity definitely lies more in the kitchen, planning elaborate trips, and tricking two adult children into spending more time with mom and dad. This is her first writing since the pandemic.
