I remember finding my rhythm in the ER. Most days I am pining for more. Suddenly: A child arrests. Feel for pulses. Compress. Epi. Do we have ROSC? This is prayer I can always get behind. Next: Expletives soar. What a gift, I say, that their child was not dying. How do we carry on?

Kajsa is a Pediatric Emergency Medicine and Global Health Fellow at Primary Children’s Hospital. She has a B.A. in English literature and spends one-fourth of her year in East Africa.
