Rattle

Her rattle is heard across the hall.
“She may die today.”

Stop.

Rounds must go on.
Celebrating another patient’s discharge.
The page: “her breathing is worse, please come”.

Stop.

Her rattle becomes deeper.
The sound clouds her history – a refugee’s journey.
Walking across borders and lying in deserts.
Tears and sadness pervade the room.

Stop.

For those that have not experienced residency, it can be a challenging experience for most. We are challenged with the suffering of loss and the celebration of healing. We are often met with interpersonal and professional differences between superiors and peers that can be difficult to navigate amidst long hours. The dichotomy remains that residency is also incredibly rewarding.
